Page size can have an impact on your search rankings. Many search engines will not scan a page that is over 150Kb’s. Others may scan only the top portion of a large web page. Keeping your pages smaller also improves download times and improves the potential customers’ experience.
Once you have your web site design tweaked and search engine friendly, it’s time to submit it to the search engines. You can go to each search engine and submit your site manually. Many hosting companies have a submission program written into the site’s control panel. Or you can use a web based submission tool. It doesn’t hurt to use all three methods
One good way to get your site noticed by the search engines is to have other sites link to it. If your local Chamber of Commerce or other trade organization offers links, sign up for them. You may even want to do reciprocal links with other business partners.
Frequently update your web site. Once you are registered with a search engine, it will periodically come back for a visit to see what has changed. Sites that are static will lose points.
If after making all of the changes to your web site and then resubmitting to the search engines you are still not recognized, wait. It may take weeks for the search engines to get around to reviewing your site.
If you absolutely must have the top ranking for a given search term, it’s going to cost you. There are companies that specialize in tweaking web sites for higher rankings. These companies are constantly monitoring the search engines and trying to figure out there algorithms. Since these algorithms are being changed constantly, constant tweaking is required to maintain a high ranking.
You may also want to consider paid advertising from the major search firms. The paid advertising will place your link in a special section on the search results page. The end user will usually know that the link is a paid advertisement and not a naturally occurring search placement. But it will guarantee that your link will be seen.
Other ways to get visitors to your site is to publish its address everywhere you can. It should always be included in business cards, stationary, email signatures, and any correspondence you have with potential customers. Your advertising campaign should focus heavily on getting the word out through your web site. |
